Ah, the slip skirt, I don’t think I’ve ever loved a skirt style more! Great for skimming over the hips and hiding a fuller thigh or curvier derriere, it looks classy without being too formal. Available in a multitude of colours and patterns from both high-street and high-end sides of the market, it’s quickly become a wardrobe staple.
I, naturally, opted for neutral tones in this style, owning one in gold, black and this shimmery cream number which I have styled up in 5 different ways to hopefully give you some inspiration as to how you can add a slip skirt into your own wardrobe.
Enjoy, Amber x
Look 1. The Denim Shirt
Smart casual has always been my vibe; however, we all interpret this pretty differently, don’t we?! I’d probably say that all five of these looks fall into that category, so I understand that the “smart casual” dress code can be a bit of a minefield. Throwing on a denim shirt can be the ideal styling solution to keeping your outfit just casual enough, without looking like you haven’t made any effort. A pair of white or cream trainers work great with the slip skirt for keeping with that effortless chic look, but can be easily switched out for some chunky heeled sandals for a Summer evening BBQ or relaxed date night.
Look 2. The Cashmere Jumper
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, good knitwear is worth investing in! A classic cashmere jumper will literally go with everything and, if properly cared for, will last you years. Paired with a statement belt and tonal, knee-high, boots you can create a classy, comfy and cosy look that can be worn both day and night. An added bonus? Matching similar colour tones throughout your whole look will make it look more expensive and elongate your figure!
Look 3. The Colour Pop
A little bit of colour can go a long way! This season pastels are very much back meaning that those of you who might be like me in the sense that you don’t regularly entertain much colour in your wardrobe, can gently introduce some. This year the classic pastel pinks and blues have been revamped in new and exciting styles – like this blue Vero Moda, short puff-sleeved, knitted jumper which gives a super chic 90’s vibe – but they’ve also been joined by a wider range of colours with sages, lemons and lilac all coming to the fore. The neutrality of the skirt keeps the pop of colour at a comfortable level for me, but there are some stunning lilac slip skirts on the market just now that I’m becoming ever more tempted to try out…
Look 4. The Graphic Tee
If you’re looking to style your slip skirt in a more edgy way, then a graphic t-shirt could be the way to go. In keeping with my own style, I opt for a t-shirt of similar colourway to my skirt but have drawn out the darker black tones in the print by matching my accessories. You could style this with a contrasting colourway t-shirt if that’s more your thing. Accessories can compliment an outfit’s vibe, so by adding a cadged sandal with a stud detail, you can continue to build upon this edgy style of the graphic tee.
Look 5. The Blazer
Again, along the smart casual route, nothing sums it up quite as well as a blazer and trainers, which just so happen to be great matches for a slip skirt. A blazer always makes me feel like I’ve really got my sh*t together, or at least look like I do, well presented and professional. Styling a blazer with a slip skirt is a much more modern take on the skirt suit, so farewell to the stuffy corporate office look and hello to a stylish 21st century boss-bitch. The trainers? Well they’re just an added bonus! No longer are women in skirts confined to uncomfortable high heels for the office, so embrace it and wear your sneaks… unless of course you own comfortable high heels (we all tell ourselves that we do) and you actually want to wear them! You do you.
