5 KEY TRENDS FOR AUTUMN / WINTER ’20

When I was a child I used to spend my weekends playing dress up, acting out a glamorous imaginary lifestyle I planned to one day live. I guess not much has really changed over the years...!

Thankfully, now the heels actually fit my feet and the outfits aren't put together from a pile of hand-me-downs or cast off from older family members. With the change in the weather creeping up upon us fast, it's definitely time to switch up the wardrobe and look out all of the chunky knits, cosy coats and boots, boots, boots!

In this post I've rounded up my top 5 trends for this Autumn Winter season and highlighted all of the pieces that you need in your collection to keep you looking and feeling good during the months ahead!

trend no.1 | Leather trousers

If you didn't get on board with the leather trouser trend last Winter then now is definitely the time to embrace it! With every style available from straight-leg trousers to cuff-hemmed joggers, wide-leg culottes to skinny jeans there really is a style out there for everyone - and in an abundance of colour options for every outfit and every occasion. Looking to dress up a simple day time outfit or add texture to a tonal outfit; leather trousers are a definite must have piece in your wardrobe. Oh, and if you're fabric conscious, you're covered too with retailers offering a wide variety of choices from faux leather to real leather with something for every budget.

trend no. 2 | Oversized collars

I recently worked with a stylist on a work shoot who's favourite saying was "don't over egg the pud", and I must agree that a lot of the time I am a firm believer that less is more, however as with all rules, this does have its exceptions. Enter AW trend number two: oversized collars, where more is very much more! Add a feminine touch to your outfit with an oversized collar, whether it be a knitted extension to the sweater or an added shirt collar detailing this versatile trend can be easily taken from daywear into evening wear. My personal favourite is this Zara number; I'm already planning the multiple ways in which I can style it up! Too girly for you though? Well my second favourite might just be the ticket... Oversized zip necks (which roll back to look like a collar when unzipped) and there's some great options available from Mango, Harvey Nichols and Reiss.

Trend no. 3 | Sweater Vests

I thought I had written this post two weeks too late when I realised that the now infamous sweater vest trend had bombarded Instagram Reels and that the H&M offering had already sold out in multiple styles. I was lucky enough to get my hands on the V-neck version and when I checked earlier there was a Black Roll-neck version still available online! None-the-less, there are still some great alternatives out there on the High street, and failing that, if you can't find a sweater vest style for you, then take to your Grandad's wardrobe. I guarantee you'll find one in there that will definitely be passable as this season chic! Style over the top of a crisp white shirt, fitted or oversize depending on your vibe, for a modern classic look or over a tight fit roll-neck jumper with a skirt and long boots for a super cosy look.

Trend No. 4 | The Shacket

You know those great Autumnal days where it's dry and crisp, not quite cold enough for a full on jacket, but a single layer just isn't enough? That's when you need a Shacket... (noun) meaning the combination of a Shirt and a Jacket and one of the key pieces of outerwear for this Autumn / Winter season. Another style that's taken over Instagram feeds and styling videos, this easy to wear piece can be thrown on top of the most simple of looks and make the whole outfit. Colour tones of black, beige and camels dominate this style, available in wool blends or leather look finishes, with details such as large over-flap pockets and waist tie belts completing the off duty, effortless look that the Shacket radiates.

Trend no. 5 | Knitted Co-ords

In these times of working from home and a general, more relaxed attitude towards everyday life attire it was only a matter of time before our comfies became a recognised and acceptable form of dress. Knitted co-ords are this season's gift to us the consumer as we no longer feel the need to change what we wear between the shops and the sofa! The key to making comfort-wear socially acceptable, is matching sets... mismatched loungewear = sloppy, matching loungewear = chic! Whether you're a girl after Kim K's heart and opt for a body skimming skirt and bralet set, are more conservative and opt for a knit top and cardi set, or opt for the boujee-ist cashmere two piece on the market, you won't regret introducing this trend into your wardrobe for Friday girls' night in or for Saturday mid morning brunch dates!

I hope you've made it this far and not rushed off to online shop just yet, but hope that something in this piece has got you as excited as I am for a new season of fashion... Even if we can't go anywhere in it! Let me know what you think of this blog in the comments, or I'm always keen to hear any ideas on what else you might like to see here.
